Diane Warren didn’t realize Chrissy Metz could sing before they worked together on the Oscar-nominated song “I’m Standing With You”.

Warren, 63, scored her eleventh Oscar nomination for the song, which was featured in Metz’s 2019 drama Breakthrough. While speaking to E! News on the red carpet ahead of the 2020 Oscars, the legendary songwriter revealed that the This Is Us actress wasn’t her first choice to sing “I’m Standing With You” — until she heard her voice!

“I was blown away. I didn’t want her originally for the song, I wanted a more established artist, I didn’t realize she could sing,” Warren told E! “She went in my studio, I said, ‘Alright, I’ll come back in a few hours.’ And when I heard her on the song, blown away. Just totally blown away. She was amazing.”

During the interview, Warren also said she is “the most-nominated woman in the 92 years of Oscar history not to have won,” but added, “I’m good with it. It’s very cool. I get to be here.”

Metz starred in Breakthrough as Joyce Smith, a real-life Missouri mom whose 14-year-old son fell through a frozen lake back in 2015, and who turned to her Christian faith to help him pull through.

Smith’s inspiring and incredible story instantly moved Metz.

“Believing in miracles myself, I could just relate,” the actress told PEOPLE back in April. “I’ve always been sort of a positive Polly and that’s how I’ve gotten through so many of the things that I’ve been through in my life. Just changing my perspective and staying positive and knowing things are happening for me and not to me. It’s not easy but you have to do it.”

“We all want something to believe in, that we’re stronger together than apart,” Metz added. “It’s so interesting how your tragedies become your triumphs. That’s what’s sort of astounding about this story, the way that it’s affecting people’s lives no matter what you believe in. We all are looking for our purpose and our path in life.”

Metz will sing “I’m Standing With You” during the 2020 Oscars ceremony on Sunday night. The actress previously wowed audiences with the tune when she made her singing debut at the ACM Awards last April.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be singIng a Diane Warren song at the Oscars,” the star previously told PEOPLE. “This is so epic!”

Metz’s fellow nominees Elton John, Cynthia Erivo, Randy Newman and Idina Menzel are all also on the star-studded list of performers.

The 92nd Annual Academy Awards are airing live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Feb. 9.

Chrissy Metz took the stage at the Sunday’s 92nd annual Academy Awards, to sing an emotional performance of “I’m Standing With You” — her Oscar-nominated balled from the drama Breakthrough.

The This Is Us star, 39, looked elegant at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California during the touching performance of the song, which was written by Diane Warren. The actress radiated in a shimmering navy gown as she sang the powerful ballad with a full chorus echoing background vocals behind her.

At the end of the song, Metz took the opportunity to honor her mother, Denise, who was rushed to the hospital after suffering a “massive stroke” last year.

“I love you, mom,” the singer said, getting choked up.

“The doctor said her prognosis was grim,” Metz recalled to Christian publication Guideposts in March. “The stroke was on the left side of the brain. He said he was certain she would have paralysis on her right side and that her speech and swallowing would be severely compromised. ‘You don’t know my mom,’ I said.”

Ahead of her Oscars performance, Metz previously told PEOPLE, “Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be singIng a Diane Warren song at the Oscars. This is so epic!“

Ironically enough, while speaking to E! News on the red carpet ahead of the Oscars, Warren revealed that the This Is Us actress wasn’t her first choice to sing “I’m Standing With You” — until she heard her voice.

Prior to the awards show, Metz revealed to E! News that she’s wasn’t nervous about singing the tune.

“I’m really, actually, very excited. I think everyone else is more nervous for me than I am,” she said. “I know that I’m there to do a job. And like, I’m going to be present, I’m going to be prepared, and I’m just going to have a good time.”

She went on to explain that she’s “so honored” to be singing on the Oscars.

“It’s such an emotional song, so I’m very excited,” Metz said, adding that she just wants to “enjoy it” and won’t be fazed by famous faces like Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Quentin Tarantino watching from the audiences.

“I think we get in our own heads about everything,” Metz said. “So, I’m gonna be like, ‘Brad! Leo! Quentin!’ Like, it’s all good.”

Meanwhile, Metz isn’t the only star performing on the Oscars.

Fellow nominees Elton John, Cynthia Erivo, Randy Newman and Idina Menzel are all among the others singing their nominated songs.

John, 72, will be on hand to sing “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from his biopic Rocketman, a new song he wrote the music for with longtime collaborator and writer Bernie Taupin. Erivo, who is the only person of color nominated in the acting categories for Harriet, will perform “Stand Up” from the Harriet Tubman biopic.

Menzel made her return to the Oscars stage with “Into the Unknown” from Frozen 2, the follow up anthem to the smash hit “Let It Go” from the original 2013 movie. She’ll be joined by 9 different singers who sang the song internationally.

And rounding out the performances is Newman, the singer-songwriter behind Toy Story 4‘s “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away.”

Last year, “Shallow” — the Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper duet from A Star Is Born won the Best Original Song prize.

It’s been a long, long time since Elton John picked up his first Oscar, but on Sunday night, the singer walked away victorious again.

John, 72, and his writing partner Bernie Taupin won the Best Original Song honor for their song “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” from Rocketman, 15 years after the rock star nabbed his first Academy Award for his work on The Lion King. John and Taupin, 69, beat out tracks from Breakthrough, Frozen 2, Harriet and Toy Story 4 at the 2020 Oscars.

“Well, this doesn’t suck” Taupin joked while accepting the award.

John, holding back tears, went on to thank his writing partner “who has been in the constant thing in life” as well as his family.

“David, I love you so much,” he said of his husband and Rocketman producer David Furnish. “And to my beautiful boys, who are watching this in Sydney, Zachary and Elijah, how much do I love you? Daddy loves you,” he gushed of his two sons.

The icon also shouted out Taron Egerton, who portrayed the music legend in the biopic.

“Taron, what a performance,” John said. “Everybody involved in Rocketman.”

Earlier in the evening, John took the Oscars stage to perform his winning song before heading to his annual post-Academy Awards AIDS fundraiser gala. However, Egerton was notably absent from John’s performance.

This Is Us: How Kate's 'Abusive' Relationship with Marc Later Affects Her Marriage with Toby

As Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) wisely told his daughter in the past, “even things that we like can be bad for us, sweetheart.” And This Is Us fans should be worried: Our Katie Girl may be headed for trouble with her boyfriend Marc (Austin Abrams).

Audiences watched as adult Kate (Chrissy Metz) had one hell of a week due to increasingly stressful marital woes with Toby (Chris Sullivan), who skipped the family retreat for their blind son Jack. Meanwhile, viewers learned more about the formative years of teen Kate (Hannah Zeile)’s relationship with her record store co-worker, and there’s not much to like about Marc.

Not only did he body-shame her when she reached for his box of chocolates and was unable to control his rage in front of Rebecca (Mandy Moore) during their coffee meet-up, but he also kicked Kate out of his car mid-drive to the Pearson cabin and left her stranded, cold and alone. Before he eventually found her and took her to the cabin, Kate frantically called her mother, who rushed to the cabin with sons Kevin and Randall, fearing for her daughter’s safety.

Before we find out what went wrong with Kate and Marc next week, Zeile tells PEOPLE that fans have only seen the beginning of just how badly Kate was affected by her first love Marc — and subsequently how that may impact her current relationship with Toby.

“I know that being in a toxic relationship can really just make you blame yourself at times when it’s not actually you, it’s the other person,” the 22-year-old actress says. “Marc’s own insecurities about himself are why he’s controlling. He’s projecting onto Kate.”

It’s telling how different Marc is from Jack, who was the ideal male figure in Kate’s life as seen by the fairytale bedtime story, during which she was able to speak up and create her own destiny. But Jack’s death changed the course of her life, something Zeile calls “heartbreaking and definitely painful.” Sadly, Kate has become more closed off with her emotions since his tragic passing.

“Not having the person you really counted on and leaned on when you were younger really, really shook the rest of her adult life. It’s been interesting seeing the storyline with Toby and adult Kate where you can see her having those feelings of self-doubt. Again, he’s gotten into shape and he’s met this group at CrossFit where he’s obviously working out with men and other women who are probably in good shape. You can see her start to feel threatened by that, and that probably does route back to the feelings that she had in her first relationship,” Zeile explains.

“The issue everyone focuses on is her weight. The weight is really the collateral damage from the actual problems which were losing your father, being in an abusive relationship and feeling put down because of that,” she continues. “That’s when people turn to coping mechanisms such as overeating or different things. Although it’s really painful, it’s important to show that being overweight is not all that there is to focus on Kate. There are reasons behind that. Peeling back the layers, getting into why and how this all came to be, I think is, although sad, very rewarding and interesting for the viewers. It gives you more of a full picture of the character.”

RELATED: This Is Us‘ Logan Shroyer Teases What Happens Between Kate and Marc: It ‘Changes Her Life’

Describing Kate and Marc’s love affair as “abusive,” the star teases that her character goes through a lot of ups and downs (perhaps more of the latter). “Abusive doesn’t always have to be physical at all. I think that there’s emotional, verbal and mental, there are all types of abuse,” she says. “I don’t really categorize one above the other, but we can definitely see in this episode some verbal and mental abuse that Kate goes through.”

Furthermore, Zeile reminds fans to recall adult Kate and Rebecca’s discovery of throwback photos from a past family dinner during which Marc showed up unannounced. “I wanted to believe so badly that you kids were happy, I didn’t see what was happening,” the matriarch said, to which Kate unnervingly responded: “I didn’t see it either.”

“That’s 25 years later and Kate’s reaction is still so visceral. You can see the pain that she and Rebecca share. So obviously this whole experience is an important landmark in her life. I think that has a lot to do with it being her first boyfriend. Her first experience, her first definition of what she thinks love is, is with him,” Zeile says.

And though everyone does not know a lot about Marc, Zeile agrees with fans that he does have an ominous quality to be wary of. “There have definitely been some subtle hints here and there that aren’t so in your face, but a little bit of a warning sign. For example, him coming to dinner unannounced by getting her address off her resumé is a little invasive,” she admits. “But also the writers do a good job of making him human, he does have a likeability and a charm. Sometimes he does seem sweet, and that’s how he reels Kate back in. I do think he’s broken, but that doesn’t mean that it’s Kate’s job to fix him.”

So if Jack were still alive, would Kate be dating a guy like Marc? Zeile thinks not.

RELATED: Justin Hartley and His This Is Us Costars Tease Season 4: ‘It’s Going to Be a Split Reaction’

“Jack was a very honorable man and he set the bar really high for what Kate should expect of a man. Maybe that’s part of the reason that she doesn’t really open up to her family at first about any struggles going on with Marc and is a little to herself, because maybe she deep down knows that this isn’t someone that Jack would have approved of,” she predicts.

“Her relationship with her father was so close, he was her rock. Then she loses her father and clings on to Marc, who was the first person that she’s ever felt like looked at her the way that her father looked at her,” she says. “She doesn’t have the best self-confidence, so she really grasps the attention that she gets from Marc. I think Marc is the first person to try and fill that void for her. She so badly just wants this to work that she is a little blinded by the good.”

When it comes to Marc’s rage-filled reactions, Zeile says Kate is “choosing not to see the bad,” adding, “Sometimes you want to protect the other person because you love them. You keep their secrets for them and you don’t want to disclose to other people because then you’re kind of pulling back the curtain. You shouldn’t feel ashamed about being mistreated. It’s not anything that you’re doing. It’s not your fault.”

As for what’s to come next for Kate and Marc, Zeile says “everything really comes to fruition” in the episode following The Big 3 trilogy. “I think those three episodes have really been a lead-up and it’s all going to unfold. The show is like a giant puzzle. We’re filling in the blanks, slowly piece by piece. We know where the end result is, but what led there — obviously the death of her father and then having an abusive relationship — her personal self-confidence probably hindered some of her own opportunities. This show always had that element of how one decision can change the trajectory of your life.”

Tuesday’s episode of This Is Us certainly gave fans the feels even more than usual.

The latest episode of the hit NBC drama saw an especially heartwarming moment between Kate (Chrissy Metz) and her mother Rebecca (Mandy Moore) that had fans praising the positive message of female empowerment.

While attending a weekend retreat for families with blind children, Rebecca suggested that she and Kate go for a night swim. But when Kate objected, Rebecca delivered one of the show’s most memorable lines to date.

“You’re fat, I’m ancient, we’re gorgeous,” Rebecca declared.

The line stuck with viewers, with many expressing their appreciation for it on social media.

“One of my favorite #ThisIsUs quotes ever!” one fan wrote.

“LOVED THIS LINE!” another said.

And that wasn’t the only touching moment between the mother and daughter. Later during the episode, Rebecca revealed to her daughter that she was suffering from memory loss problems and diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. When Kate responded with worry, Rebecca insisted that the diagnosis was having a positive impact on her life.

“The diagnosis has made me feel more powerful. I’m more fun,” she said. “Because I’m not sweating the small stuff. I don’t know how much longer I have before things might get worse. I’m done being sad and I’m done feeling worried. I feel, feel okay.”

“I’m strong. You made me strong,” Kate responded.

On this week’s episode of This Is Us, the Big Three have returned from their retreat at the Pearson family cabin to resume their daily lives and fix what was going wrong in their respective realities.

Randall (Sterling K. Brown) took the first step in addressing his mental health when he met with his therapist Dr. Leigh (Pamela Adlon) at her office, where the anxious Pearson sibling had a breakdown and subsequent breakthrough, thanks to wife Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson). Audiences also learned that it was his father Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) who introduced him to running as a way to deal with anxiety.

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) embarked on a mother-son adventure to Joni Mitchell’s old house after she told him about her new “Carpe Diem Rebecca” mentality upon awaiting for her MRI results for her mild cognitive impairment, which they later find out could be an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease. The visit to the music icon’s home was extra special because Rebecca and Jack had failed to find the house during their road trip to L.A.

As for Kate (Chrissy Metz), her marriage to Toby (Chris Sullivan) appeared to be back on course after their weekend apart and Toby learning to adapt after confessing that his son’s blindness made him “sad.” Furthermore, Toby won her over with a grand romantic gesture of transforming their garage into a music studio. And in a heartwarming flash-forward, fans learned how that home studio was instrumental in their son’s life as a musician and successful singer.

The Big Three appear to be heading in positive directions, but longtime This Is Us viewers know that a twisty cliffhanger is usually just around the corner. Metz and Sullivan tell PEOPLE what’s to come in their characters’ relationship, with the actress also teasing why audiences haven’t seen the last of Kevin and Kate’s BFF Madison (Caitlin Thompson).

“I, as Chrissy, sympathize because Toby’s really trying to come to terms with Jack’s diagnosis. It’s still really hard for him. He really does mean well and has the biggest heart, but he’s going through a lot,” Metz says of her character questioning if Toby can be the father that Jack needs.

“The thing that doesn’t really get talked about a lot is that it’s not always a fairytale. It’s not always instant bonding and true love. It’s a huge change in people’s lives, bringing another person into the world,” says Sullivan, who is expecting his first child (a baby boy!) in July with wife Rachel. “People struggle with it and have a hard time comprehending what’s happening. But they’re also under the pressures of everyone around them who tell them how excited they must be or happy they have to be. There’s not a lot of room for people to express difficulties, fear, anxiety, depression and all of those things.”

Amid unchartered territories of parenting a child with special needs, Toby chose to show his appreciation for Kate with a grand gesture, which has become his signature move. “Toby’s love language is acts of service with grand gestures or quality time. It will obviously continue, it’s a big part of who he is,” Sullivan says. “He’s figuring out all the different ways to connect to the family, not just necessarily with baby Jack but for all of them to come together.”

“Him having this beautiful gesture is who he is at his essence. It was important for him to show Kate that he is in this,” Metz explains. Her TV husband hints that the home studio “sets up a lot of fun storylines down the road,” saying, “It was a really great way to connect all of their paths and planting a musical seed.”

RELATED: This Is Us Praised for Mandy Moore’s Empowering Line: ‘You’re Fat, I’m Ancient, We’re Gorgeous’

But with relationship highs, there are inevitably low moments, too. “Everybody goes through ups and downs, ins and outs. Toby and Kate certainly come through this one and they’re figuring out how to work it out. But that doesn’t necessarily mean there won’t be hangups down the road,” Sullivan says.

“Every relationship, every marriage has ebbs and flows. We’re human, we’re having a human experience. We’re imperfect. He’s doing the best he can, as Kate is. He’s trying to make it right but there are twists and turns. What would a relationship be without them?” Metz echoes.

Speaking of the “ebbs and flows” of marriage, Metz and Sullivan reference how Toby’s depression has affected the relationship. “When he’s feeling good, he does these beautiful things. He has to get out of his own head sometimes,” Metz says.

“It’s just a matter of how mindful he is about addressing it and facing it head-on. Not avoiding it or try to go around it,” says Sullivan, who adds that Toby’s depression could “play a factor in the future.”

And just when Kate had a full plate already with her marriage, Rebecca’s ailing health and raising son Jack, her relationship with Madison was affected after Kevin and Madison slept together.

Although a brunch date seemed to smooth over Kate’s annoyance, it could just be short-term.

“We’re going to see more of what that means to Kate and how that might affect their friendship or relationship with Kevin. Of course, nothing is in vain on this show and there’s a reason why it’s unfolding. We’re going to be able to see that,” Metz shares, adding that she’s “excited” for fans to learn more.

“As humans we are imperfect and sometimes we make rash decisions for good or for worst. I’m excited about it, actually. It’s life on life’s terms, which means it’s not perfect. You celebrate the good and handle the not-so-great,” she says.

This Is Us' Chrissy Metz Calls Season 4 Finale a 'Doozy': 'There's a Lot to Unpack'

There’s one episode left until the end of This Is Us‘ fourth season —and star Chrissy Metz is eager for fans to see what happens.

Undoubtedly, in true TIU form, viewers will be left with more unanswered questions in anticipation of season 5, but the actress, 39, tells PEOPLE she was “a mess” after reading the script for the upcoming finale titled, “Strangers: Part Two.”

“Dan wrote the finale,” Metz says, referring to the show’s creator and co-showrunner Dan Fogelman.

“So Dan sent it to us, I texted him immediately, and there were some redacted scenes that were secret scenes. I was like, ‘Wait. What’s going on?’ He sent me the redacted scenes, and I was like, ‘Oh!’ I mean, I was a mess,” she remembers.

“There’s a lot to unpack. It’s going to be a doozy of a finale,” Metz teases.

Heading into the end of season 4, Metz’s onscreen siblings Sterling K. Brown and Justin Hartley, who play Randall and Kevin, respectively, previously told PEOPLE that fans will see their brotherly bond break after a heated discussion about their mother Rebecca (Mandy Moore)’s ailing health due to Alzheimer’s disease.

“There is this one thing that happens where it’s a stalemate,” Hartley said. “I’m taking a hard line and you’re taking a hard line. I’m not budging and he’s certainly not budging. It turns into one of these things where it’s like, ‘Look if this is the way it’s going to be, you’re not going to be in my life.’ It’s brutal. They come to a point where it’s like, ‘These are the choices I make and this is how I live my life.’ And the other brother is like, ‘Well Jesus man, I don’t what to tell you. I can’t have that in my life.’ ”

In the penultimate episode, Randall was able to convince Rebecca to sign on for the nine-month clinical trial in St. Louis without consulting Kevin and Kate, or her husband Miguel and the rest of the family.

Audiences will recall that the title of the season 4 premiere back in September 2019 was “Strangers,” in which many new characters were introduced, including Malik (Asante Blackk) and Cassidy (Jennifer Morrison).

And “Strangers: Part Two” could expand storylines even further as the Pearsons gather to celebrate baby Jack’s first birthday in Los Angeles.

“I don’t know if there’s a word so much as just get ready. Just get ready,” Milo Ventimiglia recently told PEOPLE about how he would describe the finale in on word. “It’s heavy, it’s beautiful and it’s really incredible.”

New faces and expanded storylines unspooled more details about the Pearson family’s future as season 4 of This Is Us closed out with the time-jumping finale, “Strangers: Part Two” — and just like Chrissy Metz recently told PEOPLE, “there’s a lot to unpack.”

In the present day, everyone gathered at Kate (Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan)’s Los Angeles home to celebrate baby Jack Damon’s first birthday. The event also marked the first time Rebecca (Mandy Moore), Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Kevin (Justin Hartley) were together again after their tense New York trip.

During the party, and much to Kate and Kevin’s surprise, Rebecca announced that she had changed her mind and would be moving to St. Louis with her husband Miguel (Jon Huertas) for nine months. What she didn’t disclose: Randall guilt-tripped her into the Alzheimer’s clinical trial by calling it “an investment in her future.”

Meanwhile, in the past, Rebecca and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) commemorated his big day (with the return of the Pittsburgh Steelers Terrible Towel birthday suit tradition!) as well as the Big Three’s first birthday with a small party and a reunion with their close confidant, Dr. K (Gerald McRaney).

As for those big revelations about the Pearsons’ futures, creator Dan Fogelman breaks down new details about the main characters and discusses where season 5 will pick up.

With an impending move to St. Louis, the matriarch has a “challenging chapter” ahead, according to Fogelman, who has already written the season 5 premiere.

“We have a big storyline planned for Mandy in the next coming season in present day as an older woman and her past timelines,” he says. “Particularly, when we land in St. Louis with her, kind of exploring with Miguel. … Here is the opportunity where we’re going to be bringing them in a location together and undergo this treatment that they didn’t necessarily plan on trying.”

Fogelman adds, “It will also allow us to get towards, which has always been the plan in the back part of our series, further understanding how their relationship bloomed then stalled then bloomed again and really getting inside their lives.”

Randall

The councilman was the only Pearson family member enthusiastic about the clinical trial, calling it “an investment in future.” Those exact words would cause immense friction between him and Kevin, who confronted Randall for forcing their mother’s hand.

And years of pent-up frustration finally came to a head when Randall unloaded on his brother about their late father Jack. “He died ashamed of you,” he told Kevin.

In another low blow, the father of three compared the “shame felt for and the pride he felt for me,” telling his actor sibling: “You’re not even chasing Dad’s shadow, Kevin, you’re chasing mine. You’ll never be him, and you’ll never be me. Because you’ll never know what it’s like to devote yourself to anyone other than yourself. You’ll pretend but it’ll just be a performance, tired, stale performance — like all of your performances.”

Fogelman explains, “Family rifts are really hard to both be a part of and to watch,” later adding, “It had to be something that would really separate these two for a period of time for this family.”

Kevin

Kevin, who was riding high on his one-year sober anniversary and the release of his nationwide cologne ad, did not take Randall’s verbal jabs lightly and delivered an equally harsh response.

“You know, I used to think the worst thing that happened to me was the day that Dad died. It’s the day they brought you home. Hand to God Randall, the worst thing that ever happened to me was the day they brought you home,” he told Randall, who — unbeknownst to Kevin — had just talked about Jack’s death and Rebecca’s past correspondence with biological father William to therapist Dr. Leigh.

“This is Cain and Abel type stuff for these two, this is a fight that goes towards literally their inception,” says Fogelman in breaking down the intense fight. “Two kind of alpha men growing up under the same roof in the same exact period of time, both with widely different skill sets. Part of making a drama is not being afraid to make people be really flawed and really ugly so that hopefully, as we tend to do on our show, the hope and the repair we offer is well-earned and well-executed when it comes.”

But that was just the second conversation to impact Kevin’s future. Madison, Kate’s best friend who he slept with during a vulnerable period, stopped by baby Jack’s party to break the news to Kevin that they are expecting.

And surprise: she’s pregnant with twins. Fogelman reveals that Madison’s OBGYN (Josh Hamilton) will be “counseling” and “tending to a couple that doesn’t know each other very well on the cusp of having twins.”

As seen in the flash-forward, Kevin’s son and daughter join their gracefully aging father by Rebecca’s bedside with Randall, who received a supportive rub on the back from his brother in what could be a sign of unity. (Also: Uncle Nicky is sporting a gold wedding ring in that same scene!)

“There are many more chapters in Kevin’s romantic story,” Fogelman says when asked about the identity of Kevin’s future fiancée. “Kevin has a journey ahead of him.”

Kate

Along with hosting her son’s party and learning of her mother’s sudden St. Louis plans, Kate also had a full plate with a “secret special thing” to do with Toby and their birthday boy.

Though her family members didn’t seem to acknowledge it, the Damons were excited for their visit to the Los Feliz Medical Center’s NICU where they pinned a family photo on the wall of fame to mark the success of baby Jack’s milestone year. While there, Toby proposed the idea of adopting a sibling for Jack after being swept up by the emotion of the happy day. “Doesn’t Jack deserve that? Doesn’t he deserve someone to spend his childhood with?” Toby asked Kate.

Fast forward to the future and audiences were introduced to Hailey (Adelaide Kane), an art curator, who may be hung up on a movie star after a one-night stand. Turns out, Hailey is Kate and Toby’s daughter, who seemingly has a close relationship with her brother (Blake Stadnik), who welcomed a daughter named Hope with his wife Lucy (Auden Thornton).

However, neither Toby nor Kate showed up to the hospital to meet their granddaughter.

“Our hope is to continue to make people invested in the future storylines by getting to those characters slowly, as we’ve done, so that by the time we’re really landing to full stories with them, if we do, you feel that great investment,” Fogelman says.

Jack

At the time of the Big Three’s first birthday, Jack and Rebecca also remember their late son Kyle. As the couple continues to grieve his death, they mark their kids’ birthdays with a surprise visit to Dr. Nathan Katowsky’s office for some guidance and comfort — the physician’s previous advice had a “sizable impact” on their lives, and Dr. K also lost his first child.

Speaking of the “human experience,” he told Jack and Rebecca: “I think the trick is not trying to keep the joys and tragedies apart but you got to let them cozy up to one and another, and co-exist. I think if you can do that and manage to forge ahead with all that joy and heartache mixed up together, never knowing which one’s going to get the upper hand, then life does have a way of shaking out to be more beautiful than tragic.”

Since the series debuted in September 2016, the Pearson family tree has become significantly larger.

“It’s always so interesting to look at the kind of matriarch and patriarch of a family, like Jack and Rebecca, and start with them simply on a bed with Milo sitting with a Terrible Towel covering up his junk, and then realize decades later there will be all these human beings that are all shoots of these people, both biologically and emotionally through adoption,” Fogelman says. “Doing it in an elegant and slow way where you know where we started with a guy and a girl on the bed and we ended with this giant fabric of life was always something we hoped to execute by the time we’re done.”

As fans have come to know, each season premiere starts with the Big Three celebrating their birthdays. When the fifth installment kicks off with their 40th birthdays, Kevin and Randall are not on speaking terms following the fallout of their verbal blowout.

Of next season’s themes, Fogelman says, “I’m very excited about, especially with where the world is right now, the uplift, and I would call it almost rebirth, that comes next season. Kind of rebirth and a lot of new beginnings, particularly for birth and rebirth would be a big thematic part of next season.”

The showrunner also teases: “There’s going to be something big in the season premiere.”

For PEOPLE’s 2020 Most Beautiful Issue, Chrissy Metz opened up about finding moments of beauty and peace in a time of uncertainty. The This Is Us actress, 39, who just released her emotional new single “Talking to God” from her upcoming debut country album, wrote the below exclusive essay.

Having the space and time to really put yourself first can help in a situation like this — whatever it is that makes you feel good in the morning to start your day.

For me, it’s my gratitude list, prayer and meditation, and taking my vitamins and drinking my lemon water. It sounds so silly, but it sets the tone and allows the space to be really present throughout the day for a conversation or any way I can be of service. But putting yourself first is hard — it’s something that I always struggled with.

Sometimes we think, “Why am I stressed or worried about this or that? There are people who are on the frontlines risking their lives.” But all of our feelings, no matter what they are, are important to feel right now. And they are, of course, relative. I don’t know anybody who’s been through something like this before, so we are learning and adjusting as we go. I think it’s important to practice being gentle with ourselves and stop judging everything that we’re doing — or not doing. We are processing so many feelings at such a high speed, it’s overwhelming.

And yes, so much comes from comparing and despairing. But we have to remember that everybody has their own way of grieving and navigating uncharted territory. What if we were gentle with other people too? If something works for someone else, then that’s what works for them. Everything is not for everybody.

We are really learning to live in the present. I think that’s really what we’re looking for, because we’re either afraid about the future or obsessing about the past. And it’s always okay to stop and reevaluate each day as you go. Being gentle with ourselves is the key — and it’s the best thing we can do.
