Chrissy Metz Thrilled for New Movie Role That 'Is Not About Being a Plus-Size Woman'

On the hit show This Is Us, Chrissy Metz‘s character is on a weight loss journey that mirrors the actress’ own life. So she’s thrilled to try something new with her latest movie role, where her size isn’t the subject.

Metz will star in the upcoming film The Impossible, based on the true story of a mom who sticks by her 14-year-old son’s side as he miraculously recovers from falling through a frozen lake. Metz was shocked to get the role — without even auditioning — and is excited that her weight is a non-issue.

“This is not a movie about weight; this is not about being a plus-size woman,” the actress, 37, told Glamour. “It’s about this beautiful, miraculous story, and that’s exciting. It’s sort of unchartered territory for me, so I’m really grateful but also nervous. A lot nervous! I’m really thrilled and honored to have this opportunity.”

The story also resonates with Metz because just a few months earlier, she was in a similar situation as she sat at her mother’s bedside.

“ was something that was really dear to my life and my heart, because my mom had a pretty severe stroke five months ago,” Metz said. “She’s doing really well now and living with my sister in Florida, but the hard part is, she has aphasia, which is where you don’t really have a vocabulary. Basically she speaks blah, blah, blahs, which we can understand because she’s our mom, but it’s kind of like playing charades. Her vocabulary could come back at any moment, so we’re really hopeful but just grateful that she’s there.”

The mother in The Impossible relies on prayer for strength, something else that Metz could understand.

“I could so relate to her convictions — this unconditional love and positivity — and her belief in her faith that her son was going to get better, just as I didn’t want to believe the prognosis that my mom’s surgeon and doctor gave her,” she said. “I totally believe in the power of positivity and collective consciousness and what you put out there.”

Metz is also excited to play a multifaceted lead female role in the movie — directed by Roxann Dawson — since the majority of films feature male leads.

“Not only are we more than , but complex in that we have layers of all sorts of characteristics and emotions,” she said. “You don’t hear men described as the smart, strong lead. I don’t know how smart some of these men are anyway! But that’s besides the point. We’re all evolving, hopefully. The only thing we can do is have compassion and understanding for people who know not what they do and enlighten people to. It’s gonna take some time, but it’s happening.”

Chrissy Metz may play a woman who has lost someone close to her on the hit NBC series This Is Us, but off-screen the actress also has been dealing with a profound loss of her own.

In an exclusive look at Wednesday’s episode of Hollywood Medium, Metz, 37, meets with Tyler Henry to reconnect with a close friend who had recently died. However, the details of his passing appear to be unsolved.

“Basically a feeling of like it’s not fair my life’s taken from me when it is,” Henry, 22, says to Metz as he struggles to piece together the tragic loss. “That’s exactly right,” she confirms.

“There’s some reference to buying a new car,” he says as she reveals, “He had just gotten one before.”

Metz’s purpose for convening with Henry is quickly vindicated as she opens up about her late friend.

“I was hoping to make a connection with a really dear friend who had recently passed away. He was such a generous man, happy. He brought such a light in any room, he would light up a room,” she tells viewers.

“He was loving and he lived his life to the fullest. And it was, of course, a shock to everyone, you know, as Tyler stated he was planning a trip and had bought a car and that of course validated that he was talking about our dear friend,” she shares.

“I don’t think justice has been served fully yet,” Henry shares.

Everything the Stars of This Is Us Have Teased About the 'Joyous' Season 2 Finale

The emotional second season of This Is Us is coming to a close.

On Tuesday, the hit NBC series will wrap things up with one major moment: the nuptials of Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan), who have endured a rocky road to get to the altar. Here’s everything the cast has teased so far.

The wedding

“Like Kate, it is unconventional, emotional, and unexpected,” Metz told Entertainment Weekly, describing the tone of the episode as “upbeat and joyous through a very important catharsis.”

“The finale is a completely new start for Kate,” she added.

Toby, meanwhile, was disappointed that his brother was a no-show at his bachelor party in the previous episode. In the finale, however, we’ll finally get to meet some of his family members.

“His parents are everything and nothing you’d expect,” Metz hinted.

And, of course, expect the unexpected.

“There is a bit of a twist, in true This Is Us fashion,” said Metz. “Because the writers are genius.”

“It’s a really joyous finale in a season marked by a lot of sadness and tragedy,” added executive producer Isaac Aptaker, referencing the death of Kate’s father, Jack (Milo Ventimiglia). “It’s about a lot of characters looking forward and has an incredible amount of uplift to it.”

Jack returns — sort of

But the day will not be without heartache: Expect Kate to be affected by the reality that her long-deceased father can’t walk down her down the aisle.

“Obviously, it’s been her life’s dream to find a man who her father would approve of but never measure up to,” said Metz. “Now that she has, it’s devastating that he won’t be there … physically.”

However, he will be there in spirit — in some sort of hallucination/dream/alternate timeline, as evidenced by the promo of a salt-and-pepper haired Jack that ran after last week’s episode.

“I thought I’d be off-duty from having to put on the age makeup, but it was fun,” Ventimiglia told PEOPLE. “And also I got the opportunity to work with some actors that I normally wouldn’t get to because of Jack’s early passing.”

Deja’s story unfolds

Last week, the show delved deeply and poignantly into the past of Deja (Lyric Ross), the guarded foster child who bid farewell to Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) to return to her birth mother, Shauna (Joy Brunson). At the end of the episode, Randall and Beth decided to take Deja and Shauna to their house, where Shauna — who’d previously fought bitter custody wars with Beth and Randall — came to a painful realization. She tearfully told the couple that she couldn’t spend the night and she couldn’t take Deja with her, leaving the Pearsons seemingly charged with caring for the foster child once again.

“Oh, boy. This ish hits the fan,” Watson told Entertainment Weekly of how the story evolves in the finale. “You’re going to see how Deja responds to all of this and what we’re in for here. Tired-face emoji. Red-face emoji.”

“I think Randall and Beth are definitely Team Randall and Beth,” she continued. “But, you know, there’s nothing like your mother’s love, so at the end of the day, they want what’s best for Deja. We’re hoping that her mom can make a turnaround, but to see her and her mom living in that car, just coming off of not being able to pay for , it sends a message to Randall and Beth that you could care for this child and provide for her in ways that her mom can’t. And they just can’t ignore that. That’s just the facts. I think they believe they can do it in a way that her mom can’t, or is unable to at the moment.”

So will Shauna return?

“We’ll be talking about Shauna, definitely,” said Watson. “I don’t know that we’ll see her, but we’ll definitely talk about her.”

Regardless of what happens, however, Watson promised the finale will confirm Deja’s permanent living situation.

“It’s beautiful. It felt like the natural way for this season to end,” she added. “We built to this moment, so it feels very natural — this is what’s coming next, the wedding. But yet, even in the midst of all that, life for each individual is still happening. So everybody is still dealing with their own stuff, but now we get to celebrate at this family event that we’ve been anticipating and feel good about. After a hard year — I mean, this was a rough one for the family, going through Jack’s death and the fire, and for slow-cookers — it’s a really beautiful way to celebrate.”

The season 2 finale of This Is Us airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.

This Is Us Cast Teases What's Next to Come in Season 3

Season 2 of This Is Us may have come to an end, but the cast and crew are already gearing up for the third season of the NBC drama.

Ahead of Tuesday evening’s finale, Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore and Justin Hartley, along with creator/executive producer Dan Fogelman, discussed the wrap of the second season and what’s to come in season 3 during their South by Southwest festival panel in Austin, Texas.

The Big Three

During the finale, a distressing scene of future Randall and future Tess apparently set in a hospital aired (Fogelman said this is 13 years into the future). He also said more on this will be revealed in season 3. However, Fogelman wouldn’t reveal if they are indeed talking about Beth.
“People will be surprised this next season; it’s really ambitious and surprising,” said Fogelman. “It’s like Beautiful Mind in our writer’s room right now.”

Audiences will also get more Kevin (Hartley) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) screen time in the third season. This comes from Fogelman’s love of watching them act together. “There is something about the two brothers together, you see a lot of it in the finale, there is something so real about them as brothers …. so I go ‘S—, we need to get Randall and Kevin on camera more.’ ”

“I hope his career goes the way he wants it to go and who knows if that means that he’s going to move into something else or he’s going to rediscover something other than acting that he likes … but I hope he continues to get healthy,” Hartley said about his character, Kevin.

Some of the kids who play the young Pearsons respectively call Moore (Rebecca Pearson) “Ms. Mandy” and
Ventimiglia (Jack Pearson) “Mr. Milo.” And dad Jack is really like a father to these actors, many of them first-time actors, taking them under his wing on set to coach and guide them.

Rebecca and Jack

Fogelman was so concerned about how much Moore had to cry in the three weeks of shooting Jack’s death that he seriously contemplated sending a clown to her trailer to cheer her up: “It was one scene after another. And first you’re at the hospital and then you’re at the house and then you have to tell the kids. It was like for three weeks. It was hard to watch.” Moore replied, “I so wish they had!”

Ventimiglia was a little more tight-lipped about what happens next with his character. When asked what he wants to see happen, he replied, “I wait for the scripts to come up.”

As for what Moore would like to learn from her character in season 3? “I am really curious about that chunk of time right after Jack passes away, that 10-year period of time, I am curious about that because I know during that time there is a disconnect with Rebecca and Kevin, and Rebecca and Kate, and I want to know how that happened.“ Moore also said that she wants to know more about how Rebecca and Miguel get together.

Next season, fans will see more of Rebecca and Jack’s origin story — which Moore said she is looking forward to as well — and more opportunities to hear Moore sing (she shared that she’d love to do a scene where she gets to sing with Chrissy Metz).

This Is Us Fun Facts (Including Season 3!)

The Pearson family was originally called the Peasings family and This is Us was written by Fogelman as a film.

The cast was super thrilled about their recent best drama ensemble Screen Actors Guild award win, which went to the principal cast. However, Moore and Ventimiglia were concerned that the six kids who play younger Kate (Metz), Kevin (Hartley) and Randall (Brown) at varying ages did not get awards — so they took it upon themselves to have exact duplicates made of the SAG Awards to present to the children.

The actress who plays Kate’s “maid of honor” and friend, Madison, is Fogelman’s wife in real life, Caitlin Thompson. So Fogelman joked that there’s no way that, contrary to what you might think in the season finale, he was going to write a love story for Madison and Kevin.

Fogelman said that they will do more with Lyric Ross, who plays Déjà. “She had never acted before, she was always going to be a huge part of the season, but when you see somebody like that, when you see the opportunity that you have with a young actor like that, you say, okay, we need to do a lot with this girl. And it’s a story not typically told on TV.”

As for what to prepare for next, Fogelman’s advice to the audience after viewing the finale together with the cast was to focus on where Kevin’s relationship is going with Zoe, as well as Vietnam being a big part of the next season. More glimpses into the future were also promised.

Along with moments of seeing old Jack, fans once again saw old Randall and eldest daughter Tess, this time at two decades into the future at a hospital preparing to see “her.” Who could the female subject in their conversation be? Is it Beth? Or could it be Deja?

The This Is Us season two finale delivered some of the Pearson family’s most heartwarming moments so far. At the top of the list? Kate’s wedding to Toby.

Chrissy Metz said her vows as Kate Pearson on the hit NBC family drama during a gorgeous garden ceremony while wearing a custom, handmade couture wedding gown created by This Is Us costume designer Hala Bahmet.

“I explored several different design ideas and have a variety of sketches ,” Bahmet told PeopleStyle. “Because the wedding was outdoors I wanted elements of nature represented in the design of the dress and a natural cascading bouquet.”

The gown’s fabrics included French embroidered and beaded lace, which was specifically selected to complement the outdoor ceremony.

“The French lace fabric I chose has a vine motif running through it in addition to floral elements,” she said.

To bring some glamour to the look — which ultimately took two weeks to construct — Bahmet “added a lot of additional beading to the bodice and along the front flounce (all sewn by hand) for more all-over sparkle.”

Before making the actual gown Metz would wear on the show, Bahmet said, “We created a mockup dress in a less expensive fabric to work out the design details.”

When it came time to film the emotional episode, Metz wanted to make sure every detail of Kate’s look was meaningful. The actress wore a pale blue manicure featuring her TV father Jack Pearson’s initials painted on two fingers.

“When we were planning Kate’s wedding look, I knew I wanted to do something special,” Metz wrote. “Honoring the beautiful relationship Jack and Kate always had, I decided to have his initials close to my heart. The nail color was my something blue.”

Want to recreate the same shade? Metz’s team used a mix of OPI’s “It’s a Boy” and “Funny Bunny” for the custom mani color.

Chrissy Metz Says Her Stepfather Beat Her and Forced Her to Do Humiliating Weigh-Ins as a Teen

Her This Is Us alter ego, Kate Pearson, has dealt with plenty of hardships, and in real life Chrissy Metz has had a harrowing past of her own.

The actress, 37, opens up in her new memoir, This Is Me, about growing up in poverty and enduring painful physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her stepfather.

“I’m a tough cookie,” Metz tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week’s cover story. “But it’s one of those things that attempts to break your spirit.”

When Metz was 8 years old, her father, a former Navy officer, left her mother Denise to raise Chrissy and her two siblings Monica, then 15 and Philip, then 13, on her own. Later, after Denise had another baby, Morgana, with a boyfriend who skipped town, she met Metz’s future stepfather, a man she called Trigger.

“My mom married Trigger at the courthouse,” Metz writes in her book. “Soon she was pregnant again, with another girl, Abigail. Trigger loved his two biological children, and was even welcoming to Morgana. Me, not so much. My mother was always at work, so she didn’t see how he treated me.”

“My body seemed to offend him, but he couldn’t help but stare, especially when I was eating. He joked about putting a lock on the refrigerator. We had lived with a lack of food for so long that when it was there, I felt like I had to eat it before it disappeared. Food was my only happiness.”

“And so, I began to hide my eating. I’d get up in the middle of the night and eat. I’d sneak food to eat in the bathroom. Cookies, chips. Things I could eat as fast as possible to avoid detection,” she writes. “Things that would give me the brief bliss of numbness.”

“I don’t remember why Trigger hit me the first time. He never punched my face. Just my body, the thing that offended him so much. He shoved me, slapped me, punched my arm. He would hit me if he thought I looked at him wrong. I remember being on the kitchen floor after he knocked me over, and I was begging to know what I did. He just shoved me hard with his foot.”

As Metz entered her early teens, the abuse became worse.

“When I was fourteen, Trigger began weighing me,” writes Metz. “He’d get the scale from the bathroom and clang it hard on the kitchen floor. ‘Well, get on the damn thing!’ Trigger would yell. ‘This is what you need to know.’ ”

“He sat in a chair next to the scale as I got on. ‘Good God almighty!’ he yelled every single time. The number then was about 140 or 130. Most of my friends weighed about ninety pounds. ‘Why are you getting fatter?’ he demanded. I look at pictures of me from that time, and I would be so fine with being that size now. But I thought I was gigantic. By then the beating had escalated. One time he hit me, and I looked right in his face. If I had a gun, I thought, I would shoot you,” she writes.

Still, Metz was conflicted about her emotions regarding her stepfather.

“Afterward, I was so upset with myself,” she writes. “How could I think that about this person I loved so much? Because I really did love him. This man did more for me than my father ever did. He was smart, and I was allowed to quietly join him in watching the Ken Burns Civil War documentaries on television. I clung to because I needed to figure out why this person could do right by me as a provider, but be unable to love me.”

Metz writes that Trigger was eventually contrite about the situation and says they’re now in a positive place. “We have a relationship now,” says Metz. “I do love him and I do care about him.”

As a teen Metz used comedy to “deflect and deal with the hardships.” Now happy and living her dream, the star says she has no regrets about her past suffering. “We all go through stuff. But I truly believe that everything that happened to me, happened for me. some beautiful lessons.”

Much like her This Is Us alter ego, Kate Pearson, Chrissy Metz is no stranger to bullying.

In her new memoir, This Is Me, the 37-year-old actress opens up about her painful history of being ridiculed and harassed, judged throughout her childhood and teens for her weight.

“By fifth or sixth grade, I started becoming aware of being different in the sense of my size,” the star tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “I started to examine everybody else’s body and my own and pick myself apart. …I was wanting to wear a T-shirt when we would go swimming because I didn’t want to expose myself. Emotionally, I was so down on myself.”

When it came to boys, “they would flirt,” says Metz, “but they’d never want to be in a relationship or date me because I was the chubby girl.”

Perhaps the most heartbreaking treatment came from the first boy Metz fell for, Derek, brother of her friend Mya.

“Let me tell you, my first kiss with Derek was — to this day! — one of the most amazing kisses, if not the best of my life,” writes Metz in her book.  “The next time we were all at Mya’s, I waited for him to acknowledge me in a real way, not just through his secret signals. When he didn’t, I decided this was what I needed to settle for — a wink here and there. He couldn’t let anyone know he liked the fat girl. Got it.”

For more from Metz, pick up this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday

“If I got too comfortable around him in front of our friends — meaning I said, ‘Hi, Derek’ — he curled that perfect upper lip and looked away, exhaling in disbelief and disgust,” she adds. “The night before, he’d kissed me and told me I was beautiful.”

Says Metz: “When you’re 14 years old, it’s devastation. Your world is upside down.” But now, Metz wonders, “How in the world did I put up with that behavior?”

RELATED VIDEO: Chrissy Metz Says Her Stepfather Beat Her and Forced Her to Do Humiliating Weigh-Ins as a Teen

Finally happy in her own skin, Metz says she’s learned valuable lessons about self-acceptance, and what she’ll no longer tolerate when it comes to relationships.

“I don’t need to beg somebody to like me, to call me, to text me,” she says. “I’m your girl or I’m not. I know what I want now and there’s no reason to settle for anything less.”

Chrissy Metz Says She Tried to Prepare Her Family for Her 'Soul-Baring' Memoir

While baring her soul in her new memoir, Chrissy Metz knew that painful memories from her past, which included family members, would be unearthed.

In advance of the release of This Is Me — on sale March 27 — Metz sat down with PEOPLE for her cover interview and admitted to feeling “scared,” specifically noting her family members’ reactions to the revelations.

“I’m really like nervous about it because this is sort of 37 years of my experiences. Some of them are great and some of them were really difficult, and a lot of them included people that I love,” Metz, 37, tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week’s cover interview.

To prepare for the book’s release, Metz says she “tried to sort of preempt the book to my family and, ‘This is what I’m talking about. I hope that you understand the process.’ My sister actually found something online last night and she was like, ‘I’m so upset. I can’t believe that this would be in the book.’ I’m like … ‘Just wait until the book comes and then find out the whole story.’ ”

“There’s all these things coming up, which of course, were to be expected, but yeah, I’m nervous about it,” Metz shares. “I’m excited, but I’m also nervous because it’s very soul-baring and I feel very exposed and vulnerable. I suppose that’s sort of what I do, but it’s my life, it’s not Kate Pearson’s life. I have all sorts of things coming up.”

For more from Metz, pick up this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday

Metz, who became an overnight sensation on NBC’s This Is Us — she stars as Kate Pearson, a triplet who struggles with her weight — admits that she is “concerned because I never want anybody to think that I spoke about something or spoke ill of them for any particular reason other than to show this evolution of the friendship or how this lesson changed me.”

The actress, who shared personal stories that center on her family — including her single mother and allegedly abusive stepfather — also maintains that she had good intentions when opening up about her past.

“I would never throw anybody under the bus, because that’s not who I am. I just have to remind myself of that because I know why I wrote the particular stories or decided to tell these stories,” she says.

In a PEOPLE exclusive excerpt of This Is Me, Metz alleges that her stepfather — a man she calls Trigger — beat her and forced her to do humiliating weigh-ins as a teenager.

He just shoved me hard with his foot,” she writes.

Trigger, though, is denying the allegations. “None of it’s true,” he told Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday. “I love her very much just like I always have and I treat her just like she’s one of mine. I want the best for her.”

With the release of her memoir nearing, Metz is hopeful that readers will “read the book in its entirety.”

“Then it will be very clear what my intentions were, but again, I cannot focus on what the reader’s going to think,” she says.

“Their perception is their reality, and so what they take from it and whoever takes whatever they take from it will be their perception, but I know that my intentions were good,” she adds. “It’s still uncharted territory for me.”

Chrissy Metz was just a child when she first felt at odds with other kids her age.

“I started becoming aware of being different in the sense of my size when I was in fifth grade,” the This Is Us star, who wrote a memoir, This Is Me, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I was going through puberty and felt great in a little bikini or shorts and I was like, ‘My body is different.’”

Continues Metz, 37: “People would tell me, ‘You’re chubby’ or ‘You’re this,’ and I started to examine everybody else’s body and my own and pick myself apart.”

Unhappy, “I started to soothe myself with what was readily available, which was food,” says Metz. “I’m going to stuff my feelings so I don’t have to think about it.”

Still, Metz used her sense of humor to “deflect” from the judgment she felt. “I would tell stories and jokes at parties,” she says. “I found an outlet … to deal with the hardships.”

When she moved to Hollywood to pursue her dream, however, Metz encountered some of the same hurtful reactions she’d experienced in her youth.

From casting directors, “I’ve heard a lot of things,” she says. “One was like, ‘You’re too pretty to play the big girl.’ What does that mean? God forbid anybody bigger than a size zero could be attractive.”

Ultimately, Metz landed her “dream” role on This Is Us and says she’s finally come to terms with her status as the breakout star. “I learned to embrace the idea that people could be inspired by me,” she says.

Continues Metz: “There would be times where I didn’t want to make him dinner because I was afraid he wouldn’t like it and I would disappoint him. That is banana pants. I denied the action of who I am because my ego was so afraid of being bruised. If that’s not crazy, I don’t know what is.”

As for getting into another relationship, (Metz has split from her ex boyfriend Josh Stancil), the actress isn’t sure she’s ready: “I want to date; I’d love to meet someone organically. But I’m not really in that headspace.”

Chrissy Metz‘s karaoke game is strong. The This Is Us star showed off her skills in Boston on Thursday evening, when she headed to the Hong Kong, a bar and karaoke club in Faneuil Hall.

Dressed in a long, black V-neck dress with white birds on it, Metz and her assistant belted out Destiny’s Child’s hit “Say My Name.” Metz took Beyonce’s part, and kept a serious face while she belted out the words.

“She waited just like every body else, and when it was her time to sing, she went up on the stage,” says bar manager Tedd Lee, who tells PEOPLE that Metz was “very humble.”

Always a friendly face, Metz even stopped to pose for photos with a few fans at the bar after she hung up the mic.

“She was very kind,” Lee adds. “She wasn’t bothered by people rushing to talk to her. She was sitting at the table right next to the stage, in the spotlight. She did not seemed bothered by it at all. She was not shying away from anybody.”

Earlier that evening, Metz appeared at the Wilbur Theatre for her book tour. Her memoir, Loving the Person You Are Today: This Is Me, is on shelves now.

Chrissy Metz literally bared all to increase her self-confidence.

Speaking with Jenny McCarthy on Tuesday in an interview for SiriusXM’s The Jenny McCarthy Show, the This Is Us star, 37, revealed the helpful guidance she once received when it came to loving her body.

“My vocal coach in L.A., Dot Todman, she actually had me, she said, ‘Chrissy, I want you to sing in the mirror naked,’ I was like, ‘The hell? You want me to what?’ ” Metz recalled.

The actress, who has been open about her weight, also shared that feeling empowered helped her to find her identity.

“It’s just accepting you’re not your body. It’s the vessel that your spirit occupies,” Metz said about being comfortable in her own skin.

“Knowing that not all that I am is my body, also esteemable acts create self-esteem,” the This Is Me: Loving the Person You Are Today author shared. “When I can be kind and of service, when I’m loving, then that creates that true confidence within yourself and you’re like, ‘None of this matters.’ It’s just who I am and how I treat people. That’s all that matters.”

Singing has been a big passion for Metz, who portrays aspiring singer Kate Pearson on the hit NBC series. During the second season, Metz showcased her real singing voice when she sang Fleetwood Mac’s 1975 classic “Landslide” in episode two.

“ Dan is writing my dream life. I enjoy singing very much,” she said in September 2017.

Recently, in March, Metz revealed to PEOPLE that she’s finally come to terms with her status as the breakout star. “I learned to embrace the idea that people could be inspired by me,” she said.

And when it comes to her weight, Metz revealed she’s finally happy in her own skin. “I don’t focus on numbers. It’s all about how I feel,” she said.

It’s the Pearson family cabin photo all This Is Us fans have been waiting for!

Though Milo Ventimiglia and Sterling K. Brown‘s characters shared a scene together in season one, audiences had yet to see beloved father Jack with the adult versions of twins Kate and Kevin, played by Chrissy Metz and Justin Hartley.

The cast, including matriarch Mandy Moore, got into character for a special photo shoot with famed photographer Annie Leibovitz and PEOPLE has the exclusive first look at the photos.

This is the first TV series that Leibovitz, who considers herself a big fan of the hit NBC series, has shot since 2005 when she photographed the cast of HBO’s The Sopranos.

“It’s exciting. It’s nice when a legendary photographer, from the many years of good work that she does, is now working with us over here,” Ventimiglia says in an exclusive behind-the-scenes video. “We’re all very excited.”

“She’s an icon. She’s everything,” says Moore. “ surprisingly knows a lot about the show, which I wasn’t expecting.”

“We talked a lot about our particular characters, and I’ve never really quite done a photo shoot before, even when we’re supposed to be in character, where we really take that into consideration as much as this shoot,” continues the actress, who portrays Rebecca Pearson. “I felt this sort of bittersweet, dream-like quality that this particular shoot employed because Mom and Dad are with their grown children in different eras. It was sort of a bucket list thing, that’s for sure.”

Moore adds, “It’s pretty humbling that she’s watched every episode of our show. I mean, that’s definitely a win for us!”

Joining the Pearson brood at the shoot were Susan Kelechi Watson, who plays Beth Pearson, and Chris Sullivan, who plays Toby Damon.

“It’s completely humbling and pretty mind-blowing … It’s nice to work with someone who is at the height of their craft and has been so for forever,” Brown says of posing for Leibovitz. “Every day is sort of a pinch-me moment, being a part of this show.”

Meanwhile, for Metz, the photo shoot was a dream come true.

“It’s sort of one of those things, as an actor, everyone dreams about,” she says of working with Leibovitz. “You dream about having a job and then hopefully the job sticks and that you’ll get nominated or you’re critically acclaimed. She’s wonderful in what she captures. It’s such a special moment.”

Ventimiglia recently told PEOPLE about the best thing he’s ever taken from the set — and his answer was as sweetly sentimental as Jack Pearson himself.

“The best thing I’ve ever taken from a set is friends,” he said in PEOPLE’s special edition, The Complete Guide to This Is Us.

“For me, it’s not about an object or anything. For me, it’s about looking at someone that I’ve now worked with for a year or a month or something and saying to them, ‘I’m gonna know you the rest of my life.’ That’s probably the best thing you can take from a set.”

Meanwhile, Moore opened up to PEOPLE about the upcoming third season — and what to expect in the wake of the loss of Jack.

“We see the kids are just about to go off to college,” she shared. “I’m looking forward to watching sort of reconcile how she’s going to be able to step up to the plate.”

Moore added, “I think she really just regards Jack as the golden parent and the superhero, so I’m curious to see what life is like as a single mom, and be a parent to these kids after this tragedy.”

Everything to Expect from This Is Us Season 3: War Flashbacks, New Babies and More

This Is Us comes back Sept. 25 to clear up questions about the past — while delivering new twists.

“We can’t wait to be back on the air,” executive producer Elizabeth Berger says in PEOPLE’s special edition A Complete Guide to This Is Us. “There is an exciting next chapter to tell.”

Here are some highlights of what you can expect this fall, straight from creator Dan Fogelman and the cast themselves.

Jack and Nicky’s war years

We know Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) had a brother, Nicky, who died in Vietnam. Ventimiglia says we’ll see “Jack in a war zone… everything’s relating to his brother.” Adds creator Dan Fogelman, “People are going to be talking about Jack’s brother an awful lot.” On a related note, Kevin (Justin Hartley) goes to Vietnam with Zoe, Beth’s cousin (Susan Kelechi Watson). “A vacation? Or something deeper? We’ll learn the answers,” Fogelman promises.

Kevin: happy at last?

The season will likely explore what it means for Kevin to date Beth’s close relative, both “funny and the danger that brings up for this family,” says Fogelman. Then the Stallone movie comes out. “Is it going to bomb and be another arrow to the heart? Or could Kevin’s career take a step in a much more serious real direction?”

Rebecca before and after Jack

We’ll spend time with “Jack and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) in the courtship phases, when they’re bushy tailed and bright eyed,” says Fogelman. But we also see her as a single mom of three college-aged kids. Reveals Moore: “Randall (Sterling K. Brown) ends up staying closer to home and doesn’t go to Howard. I’m curious to see the repercussions of all of that.”

Kate and Toby want a baby

“Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby’s (Chris Sullivan) journey is centered around this quest to start a family,” says Fogelman. Sullivan adds that fans should expect “plenty of adjustments, as two people fully merge their lives.” Kevin will be there to support Kate, says Hartley, “because it doesn’t look like Toby is doing very well.”

Future Tess has a stress: “her”

In season 2, older Randall gravely tells his eldest daughter, “It’s time to go see her.” Tess (Eris Baker) replies, “I’m not ready.” Is it Beth? Deja? Annie? Brown told EW that “I know… but Fogelman would cut off my big toe if I told you. I can tell you it’s probably not what you suspect.”

Find out what’s next for the Pearson family in PEOPLE’s new special issue, The Complete Guide to This Is Us, which includes new interviews with the cast and creators and exclusive photos. Available on Amazon and wherever magazines are sold.

Chrissy Metz loves her fans — but she admits it’s not always easy being so recognized because of her work on This Is Us.

The actress, 37, opened up about working on the hit drama and how fame has affected her during a red carpet interview with E! News on Monday ahead of the 2018 Emmy Awards.

Asked whether she’s every denied fans a selfie or autograph, the actress said, “Only because I’ve missed flights.”

“I feel terrible but I made a commitment to be somewhere,” she continued. “It becomes a line, which is a gift. I feel terrible for .”

The actress’ life has changed since she had her big break in NBC’s hit show in September 2016. She was nominated for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series in 2017 for her role as Kate Pearson.

As for the third season of the show, Metz said the cast “hit the ground running” when it came to filming.

“We’re in episode six now of 18 episodes,” she said. “I miss it. You’re gone only five months, I had a great time, rested a bit, had a real vacation.”

Fans can expect “good news” for Kate and her fiancé Toby after the two suffered a heartbreaking miscarriage last season.

“I just know there’s going to be some good news for Kate and Toby even though it’ll be difficult getting there,” Metz teased. “It’ll be good. I have to keep some secrets for months, months, months. It’s really hard!”

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Michael Che and Colin Jost, will air live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Monday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

This Is Us Returns with Happier Times as Jack and Rebecca's (Awkward!) First Date Is Revealed

Season 2 of This Is Us was full of heartbreaking and bittersweet memories (that house fire! Jack’s death! Kate’s miscarriage!) and in season 3, fans were welcomed back with happier moments.

Like previous seasons, Tuesday’s premiere featured Big Three birthday celebrations as Randall, Kate and Kevin turn 38.

Kate kicked off her big day with Toby at a disappointing doctor’s consultation to begin IVF treatments. The couple was told that due to Kate’s weight, the egg retrieval process would be too “invasive” despite her 40-lb. weight loss. “At your weight, the chances of a successful pregnancy is risky … egg retrieval is invasive at your BMI,” the doctor said. But it’s Kate’s birthday after all: her birthday wish comes true as she and Toby later find out that their doctor would take the risk.

Across town, Randall takes Deja to his late father William’s house where he tells her that he and wife Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) are thinking of adopting her. Little do the Pearsons know, Deja confronted her birth father similar to how Randall did with William in the season 1 premiere.

And then there’s Kevin. Though he tried to keep his new romance with Beth’s cousin Zoe a secret, Randall and Beth ultimately find out. “She will break you Kevin. … Her background is complicated. She eats men up and spits them out,” Beth warned him. Ahead of the premiere of his Ron Howard-directed film, Hill 400, he may be caught up in a new relationship with Zoe despite Beth’s forewarning.

Meanwhile, fans and viewers time traveled back to the ’70s and found out more about the beginning of Jack and Rebecca’s first date after their chance meeting at a bar that was shown in season 1.

After returning from Vietnam and acclimating back to the real world, Jack has little finances and confessed to Rebecca that he only had $9 when he took her to the carnival, which was ruined due to the pouring rain. “If I bought the umbrella, I wouldn’t have enough to play any of the games,” he said. “You don’t bring a girl to a carnival and not let her play any games.”

The first new scenes of his time in Vietnam were shown in a flashback montage. “I don’t like talking about the war or my brother. It makes me sad. It makes me angry. But I like talking to you, a lot,” said Jack, who briefly mentions sibling Nicky, portrayed by newcomer Michael Arangano. “I’m sorry it was such a lousy first date, I’m really sorry.”

Though Rebecca admitted “it was a pretty bad first date,” she ultimately fell for Jack’s charm and surprised him with their first kiss. But fans shockingly learned there’s another mustached man competing for Rebecca’s heart!

Back to the present day, Randall and adult Tess revisit that ominous “it was time to see her” moment from the season 2 finale. Fans found out in the season 3 premiere that Randall called old Toby, who was in bed, presumably still fighting depression. “I’m not coming, she doesn’t want to see me,” Toby responded before Randall told him, “No, she wants to see you.” Could the mysterious “her” identity be Kate?

RELATED VIDEO: Everything to Expect from This Is Us Season 3: War Flashbacks, New Babies and More

As for what’s to come this season, the cast previously told PEOPLE that a few puzzle pieces will fall into place by midseason. But in TIU fashion, there will be some curveballs as well.

“Episode four is a doozy. We’re going to see a side of Kate we haven’t seen so far. Kate hasn’t felt her feelings deeply and a lot of them are bubbling to the surface. As humans, we don’t always know how to handle them or express them. Sometimes anger is sometimes just sadness masked,” said Metz, alluding to the miscarriage last season as well as Toby’s battle with depression.

“There are a lot of complex issues and emotions that she’s handling. She’s a newlywed but in a lot of pain from her father’s death so there’s a lot that affects a new newlywed relationship. She’s really got to show up for Toby and herself. Every single thing is a lesson. Every single one of her family members is her teacher,” she added.

Meanwhile, Hartley teased: “We are knee deep in everything, like literally really, really deep in our storylines, like Jack’s backstory in Vietnam and Kevin’s sobriety and his new relationship.”

And Sullivan is excited for fans to see his character’s origin story. “I am going to have to go places as an actor I haven’t gone in a long time. I’m excited and terrified but it’ll be good,” he said. “For Kate and Toby, I’m interested to see if they continue to try and start a family and how they go about doing it.”

Chrissy Metz is feeling thankful.

Speaking to PEOPLE at the This Is Us season 3 screening and panel on Tuesday in Los Angeles, the actress opened up about the reportedly massive pay raises the five central stars of the hit NBC show recently negotiated.

“I think some people got some details wrong in the news, but I think when you stay present and you stay grateful, you continue to manifest really beautiful things,” said Metz, 37.

“And that continues to happen,” she added. “I’m continually grateful. My life is completely changed in many, many ways!”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Metz (who plays Kate), Milo Ventimiglia (Jack), Mandy Moore (Rebecca), Sterling K. Brown (Randall) and Justin Hartley (Kevin) renegotiated their contracts with 20th Century Fox Television and scored significant pay raises for season 3, which premiered Tuesday and will consist of 18 episodes.

The actors will see their per-episode salary jump to $250,000, once their respective signing bonuses are factored in, according to THR‘s sources. The stars will reportedly now earn $4.5 million per season. (NBC and 20th TV declined to comment.)

THR reports that Metz, who famously had 81 cents in her bank account when she booked This Is Us, previously earned $40,000 per episode.

Metz opened up about her humble beginnings in a piece for Glamour last year.

“I kept auditioning, with no savings and no money, credit card debt gaining interest,” she said. “I went on unemployment. I bought ramen noodles at dollar stores. I never had to — God forbid — live on the streets; I moved in with a roommate who told me, ‘Stay with me until you can afford rent. Don’t give up.’ ”

And while the show has made her a star, she said she still lives fairly modestly.

“Funny, but I still get buyer’s remorse,” she said. “I just got my first pair of Alexander McQueen shoes; I’m so convinced I shouldn’t have bought them, I still haven’t busted them out of the box.”

This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
